About the association

Association of Nursing Directors of University Hospitals and Medical Universities in Germany (VPU) e.V. is a management association with strategic and political goals. It represents the interests of its members at the professional and professional-political level and is committed to the positioning and further development of professional nursing in university hospitals as well as a dialogue with politics and society. In 1985, the association was initially founded as a loose working group of individual nursing directors until it was registered as an association with its headquarters in Berlin in 1998. Today, 34 nursing directors of university hospitals and medical universities in Germany are organised in the VPU under the board of directors. Together, the VPU represents about 60,000 nursing professionals from university hospitals and medical schools in Germany.

The Nursing Science and Practice Development Network at the VPU

In order to strengthen evidence-based nursing science and to promote university qualifications in nursing, a network of nursing scientists from university hospitals was formed within the association in 2010. The network "Nursing Science and Practice Development" in the VPU promotes the exchange and joint research applications of its members and promotes joint developments as well as political positioning. With practice and research projects as well as various publications, the network thus promotes the further development and necessary structure building for evidence-based nursing practice at university hospitals. Currently, 44 nursing scientists from 29 university hospitals and medical universities are networked.
